What if empowering one woman could strengthen an entire community?
Community-driven initiatives are not built by outsiders arriving with solutions. They are built when women recognise the power they already hold, when communities invest in one another, and when someone finally says: “I believe in you.”
While our work at The Empathologist Foundation is centred on supporting mothers who have experienced the trauma of placing their children for adoption to regain confidence, agency, and hope, our vision extends much further. Healing cannot happen in isolation. It happens in community.
Through countless conversations with women navigating systems that have repeatedly failed them, we have witnessed something deeply concerning: not only a lack of access to resources, but a lack of awareness that support structures, organisations, and opportunities even exist. Too often, women are left to survive alone. And when they begin to rebuild their lives, they are sometimes met not with celebration, but with resistance from those around them. What a paradox it is that another woman’s growth can be perceived as a threat rather than an invitation to rise together.
Yet, we have learned that empowering one woman can transform an entire community.
Five months ago, we shared the story of the creation of The Voice of an Angel Baby Nursery and Girls Club House in Delft, Cape Town. What started as a way to support one beneficiary, Paballo, to return to her studies has evolved into something much bigger.
After nearly a year of planning, coordination, persistence, and belief, the nursery became a reality. Completed in December, it now serves as a safe and nurturing environment for babies and girls in the community.
Managed by Paballo herself, this space is a testament to what becomes possible when women are trusted, resourced, and supported to lead change within their own communities. The initiative not only created employment for Paballo and a place of safety for local children, but also supported the woman who rents the land on which the nursery stands and created opportunities for her daughter to become involved.
But we knew that caring for communities also means investing in the next generation of leaders.
As we listened to the girls attending the club, another need emerged: the absence of spaces dedicated to reading for pleasure. Through collaboration with our dear friend Tania Kliphuis from the Otto Foundation, an idea began to take shape. Together with Paballo, an avid reader who firmly believes that education is the key, we worked to make it happen.
On 6 June, the reading club ¨Dream Readers¨ was born.
After an initial provision of books, and the follow up made by Paballo about their interests, sixteen girls, aged between 11 and 17, gathered for the first session. The journey to Cape Town itself became part of the experience, opening their minds to realities beyond what they see every day and reminding them that the world is bigger than the boundaries imposed by circumstance.
And we are dreaming even bigger: these girls will become ambassadors of reading in their own homes, encouraging their mothers to rediscover the joy of books. An adult reading club is already on its way.
And still, the ripple effect continues.
Following the closure of our previous Retail Training Centre and Thrift Shop collaboration, clothing donations found a new purpose. They were used to support another woman in the community recovering after being the victim of a hit-and-run. We entrusted the initiative to Muriel, another beneficiary from the same community who has lovingly cared for her neighbour while using the proceeds from the sales to sustain this support. Soon, the woman herself, a talented seamstress, will become part of this growing network of women helping women and collaborating with the foundation.
This is what community health looks like.
It is not only clinics and services. It is relationships, trust, belonging, solidarity, and opportunities to contribute. It is recognising women not as passive recipients of aid, but as leaders, mentors, entrepreneurs, caregivers, and changemakers.
Feminism, at its heart, is not about individual success stories. It is about creating conditions where women can rise together, where communities become stronger because women have the resources and confidence to exercise their agency.
Slowly but steadily, the women in this community are beginning to recognise that the change they seek may already be in their hands. Sometimes, all they need is for someone to believe in them long enough until they can believe in themselves.
And perhaps that is our invitation to all of us.
