A Heartwarming Winter Collaboration with FEDISA

“Christmas in July” at The Empathologist Foundation

On Friday, 4 July, something truly special unfolded at our Somerset West Training Centre and Thrift Store opened in collaboration with Khethani Women’s Wellness — a space that’s slowly transforming into a vibrant hub for women’s empowerment and skill development. We had the joy of welcoming the incredible team from FEDISA, South Africa’s leading fashion school, as part of their ongoing CSI Bomber Jacket Project.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone for us at The Empathologist Foundation, as we proudly became one of the selected charity organisations to receive clothing donations created by FEDISA’s second-year fashion students. These talented young designers poured their creativity, skill, and heart into producing custom-designed bomber jackets, leggings, and T-shirts — not as a commercial product, but as a gift of dignity and care for children in need.

Fashion with a Purpose

FEDISA’s initiative isn’t just about fashion — it’s about using education and design to inspire social change. As part of their Garment Construction module, the students learn not only to create technically sound garments but to reflect on how their skills can benefit real people, beyond the runway or the showroom. Each piece is a result of hands-on learning, thoughtful design, and compassion — transforming fabric into a symbol of warmth, empowerment, and solidarity.

This year, the initiative culminated in donations to three children’s homes and community programmes around Cape Town. We are deeply honoured that The Empathologist Foundation was chosen as one of the recipienTs.

A Moment of Joy and Empowerment

When the FEDISA team arrived at our Somerset West centre, they were greeted by a small group of girls from Ms. P’s Kids Club, one of our most meaningful and resilient community partnerships. Ms. P, a fierce and selfless advocate for girls’ rights in her neighbourhood, runs a daily programme that helps adolescent girls with their homework, provides mentorship, and teaches them about consent, self-worth, and the power of education.

The girls had no idea what was inside the boxes.

As they opened their personalized clothing sets — warm bomber jackets, soft leggings, and beautifully designed T-shirts — their faces lit up with pure joy. It was an unforgettable moment. For many of these girls, this was the first time they received a brand-new outfit crafted just for them. It truly felt like Christmas in July.

And in a very real way, it was. These garments weren’t just clothes — they were gifts of confidence, tools for warmth in winter, and tangible reminders that there are people who care deeply about their futures.

More Than a Handover — A Meeting of Missions

What made the day even more meaningful was the connection between the FEDISA team and the young girls they were supporting. There was no separation — just shared purpose and inspiration.

We were also able to share with the FEDISA team our upcoming Thrift & Thrive project, a new initiative housed in the same space that will serve as both a retail training hub and empowerment space for local women. Here, women will learn retail skills, gain confidence, and find a stepping stone toward economic independence. It’s a space for second chances and sustainable growth, and we look forward to inviting more partners and supporters to join us on this journey.

A Heartfelt Thank You

To Ms. K and the entire FEDISA faculty, to the student designers who poured their hearts into this initiative, and to everyone who helped make this collaboration happen — thank you. Your belief in the power of design to change lives is deeply aligned with our mission, and we’re proud to be walking this path alongside you.

As winter continues across the Cape, these jackets are more than a source of warmth — they’re a reminder that kindness, collaboration, and creativity can build bridges across communities.

We look forward to continuing this partnership and can’t wait to see what future collaborations might bring.

With gratitude,
The Empathologist Foundation Team
